Aluminum Extrusion Troubleshooting

Excessive pressure/deflection

Problem Description

Abnormally high extrusion pressure causes tooling deflection and profile instability.

Cause–Correction Mapping
  • Excessive long bearing depth
    Cause in: Die

      Corrections

    • Recess cap to reduce overall bearing depth (length).

  • Inadequate support tooling
    Cause in: Die

      Corrections

    • Use proper tooling.

  • Small ports and wide support bridges or webs
    Cause in: Die

      Corrections

    • Open ports.

Disadvantage: Opening ports may change flow; added tool repair cost.
    • Mill recess at port opening (similar to step or pocket).

Advantage: Recess step will ease pressure on core.

Please note that the information provided in this article is intended to be a general guide to the causes and corrections of Excessive pressure/deflection in aluminum extrusion. However, it is important to note that the specific cause and correction of any particular defect will vary depending on the specific extrusion process, alloy, and other factors. Therefore, it is important to consult with an experienced and professional engineer to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made and the most suitable correction is chosen.
